About Red Sea Riviera

Thanks to its huge coral reefs and very rich coastal reef, with a unique variety of fish, and its submerged highs surrounded by deeper waters where historical ship relics lie, the Red Sea is really a paradise for the divers and sea lovers.

In 1989 a committee made up by scientists from all over the world stated that the north coastline of the Red Sea, about 1800 km, is one of the Seven Underwater Wonders of the World.

The Red Sea is a rich and diverse ecosystem where more than 1200 species of fish have been recorded and around 10% of these are found nowhere else and it is visited by almost 20 species of shark.

The coastline has beautiful fringing reefs that are 5000–7000 years old, while the coral reef itself forms stunning platforms, lagoons along the coast and occasional other features such as cylinders, for instance the Blue Hole found in Dahab, without forgetting many offshore reefs that include several true atolls. The Red Sea is also home to one of the most known wreck dive site, that one of the SS Thistlegorm, a British armed merchant navy ship sunk in 1941 and discovered in the early fifties by Jacques-Yves Cousteau using information from local fishermen.

The special biodiversity of the area is recognized by the Egyptian government, who set up the Ras Mohammed National Park in 1983: the rules and regulations governing this area protect local marine life, which has become a major draw for diving enthusiasts.
